What is stsystra.exe?
This is the SigmaTel C-Major Audio Tray Application. It is installed with the drivers for SigmaTel audio devices and comes pre-installed on many computers, including many of those from Dell. Its purpose is to facilitate the ability to change the advanced settings of SigmaTel audio devices.

This process is not essential to the operation of the system and can safely be killed or disabled. By killing this process, you will lose the ability to modify the advanced settings on your audio device. If the process is problematic or you simply do not want it using up resources, it is safe to disable from within msconfig.

Dangers of stsystra
As this is a legitimate executable that comes with SigmaTel audio drivers, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %SystemRoot%. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name. There are several viruses and Trojans, however, that are known to use the name systra.exe (note that there is no "st" at the beginning). If you see that process running, it is probably a virus or Trojan.

There not should typically be more than one instance of stsystra.exe running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have a SigmaTel audio device, the presence of this executable is a possible sign of a virus infection.

Common problems
  • "stsystra.exe - entry point not found"
    • This is a known problem for which there is no official solution. Try uninstalling and reinstalling your SigmaTel audio drivers.
    • If the problem persists, it is recommended that you disable the process.
