McAfee Security HTML Dialog - McAfee SecurityCenter - McAfee, Inc

File description

Mghtml.exe with description McAfee Security HTML Dialog is a process file from company McAfee, Inc belonging to product McAfee SecurityCenter.
The file is not digitally signed.

What is mghtml.exe?
This is a core part of McAfee VirusScan. This process is installed with McAfee VirusScan as well as any McAfee products that include virus protection.

This process is not essential to the proper operation of the system; however, you should not terminate it unless it is causing problems. By terminating it, you will lose the anti-virus functionality of your McAfee products. If you wish to disable this process permanently, you should uninstall your McAfee software.

Dangers of mghtml
As this is a relatively common process that exists on any system with McAfee software, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name but be stored somewhere other than in a McAfee-related subdirectory of %ProgramFiles%. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to it but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.

There will typically be no more than one instance of this process running at any given time. The presence of multiple instances may be indicative of a malware infection. Furthermore, if you do not have any McAfee software installed, the presence of this executable is a likely sign of infection. If you do have McAfee VirusScan installed and you see one copy of this process running, however, your system is not necessarily clean. Many viruses will kill this process and possibly run another process with the same name immediately afterwards.

Common problems
  • You get an application error when trying to start McAfee VirusScan
    • This is known to occur when a virus corrupts your installation of McAfee. You will need to reboot into safe mode to run a virus scan and reinstall your software.
  • This process uses 100% of the CPU
    • This can occur if there is a conflict with other security software installed on your computer. Try disabling any other security software you have installed.
    • If the problem persists, try reinstalling your McAfee software.
