What is mcods.exe?
This is the McAfee On-Demand Scanner. It is the part of McAfee VirusScan responsible for performing on-demand virus-scans.

This process is not essential to the operation of the system but should not be disabled or removed. If you wish to disable this process, you should do so by uninstalling McAfee VirusScan. Note that disabling this process in any way will prevent you from performing virus scans on your system.

Dangers of mcods
As this is a legitimate process that is installed on many systems, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\McAfee\VirusScan. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.

There is typically only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have McAfee VirusScan installed, the presence of this process is a strong indicator of a malware infection.

Common problems
  • This process uses 100% CPU time
    • This is not uncommon when scanning your system for viruses. If the CPU usage goes down after the scan is over, this is not a cause for concern.
  • Application Error when shutting down
    • This is a known error that has since been fixed in a patch. Download and install any available updates for McAfee VirusScan.
