What is LSSrvc.exe?
This is the LightScribe Service. Its purpose is to allow Nero or other LightScribe-capable CD/DVD burning applications to print LightScribe labels on compatible discs. It is installed as a part of the Nero CD/DVD burning software package.

This process is not critical to the operation of the system; however, it should not be killed unless it is causing problems. Killing this process will result in you being unable to print LightScribe labels. If you do not have a LightScribe-capable burner or do not write LightScribe labels, the process should be safe to terminate.

Dangers of LSSrvc
As this is a common process that runs on most systems that have CD/DVD burning software and a LightScribe-capable burner, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\LightScribe. Other malware may use a name that appears similar but has slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.

There is typically no more than one instance of this process running at a given time. The presence of more than one instance of this process in the Task Manager may be an indicator of a malware infection. Furthermore, if you do not have a LightScribe capable burner, you should never see this process anywhere on your system.

Common problems
  • There are no known problems that are commonly associated with this process. If you encounter any problems with it and you do not use LightScribe, you should simply disable the process. If you do use LightScribe, you can try reinstalling your CD/DVD burner drivers (if applicable) and your disc burning software.
