What is iPodService.exe?
This is the Apple iPod Service. Its purpose is to facilitate connectivity with Apple iPod devices. It is installed along with iTunes, as well as other pieces of Apple software.

This process is not essential to the operation of the system and can safely be disabled. By killing this process, however, you will lose connectivity with your iPod. If you do not have an iPod, this service is useless. Some users have reported that this process cannot be killed while iTunes is running. Furthermore, if you disable the service in services.msc, iTunes re-enables it the next time you run it. Since it is not possible to uninstall this portion of the software, you can opt to rename the executable and/or replace it with a dummy file. The screenshot below illustrates how it should appear in the task manager:

As you can see in this screenshot, iPodService.exe typically runs as SYSTEM. A process with this name running as a different user may be indicative of a malware infection.

Dangers of iPodService
As this is a legitimate executable that all iPod and iTunes users have on their system, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\iPod\bin. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.

There should never be more than one instance of iPodService.exe running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have iTunes installed on your system, the presence of this executable is a likely sign of a virus infection.

Common problems
  • This process opens port 2078
    • This is by design. If you do not desire this behavior, you can disable the process as described above.
  • This process uses excessive amounts of memory
    • This is a widely reported problem. If you do not have an iPod, it is recommended that you disable it as described above.
