What is gdi.exe?
This is the core component of the Microsoft Graphics Device Interface. It is one of the three core subsystems of Windows. Its purpose is to facilitate the representation of graphical objects on the screen (e.g., windows) and transmit them to devices such as monitors and printers. It is responsible for drawing lines, fonts, and dealing with color palettes. It is not suitable for fast graphics, however, as GDI does not synchronize with the frame buffer and does not support rasterization. The following screenshot illustrates how the executable's properties should look:

This process is essential to the operation of the system and must not be disabled. Disabling or deleting this process will make your system unbootable and necessitate a reinstallation of Windows.

Dangers of gdi
As this is a critical system process on all Windows machines, it is common for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %SystemRoot%\System32. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. The following malware is known to disguise itself as gdi.exe:
  • W32/Rado-A (%SystemRoot%)
    • This is a worm that makes several copies of itself on your system.
There should not typically see an instance of gdi.exe running in the Task Manager. The presence of an instance may be an indicator of a malware infection.

Common problems
  • "Error loading GDI.EXE. You must reinstall Windows."
    • If the executable is still there, this is likely caused by a deleted Fonts directory. Either reinstall Windows or use your Windows installation disc to boot into the Recovery Console to restore your fonts.
  • This process occasionally causes fatal errors
    • This can be caused by faulty graphics card drivers. Download and install the latest drivers from your video card manufacturer's website.
  • A divide error occurs in this module
    • This is caused by the CPU performing incorrect calculations. This can be caused by a failing or overheating CPU, or by excessive overclocking of the CPU. If the problem persists, your CPU is defective.
