What is gcasDtServ.exe?
GcasDtServ.exe is part of Giant Anti-Spyware/Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta. This product has been superseded by Windows Defender.

This process is not essential to the operation of the system and may be safely disabled or uninstalled. By doing so, however, you will lose the spyware protection provided by the software. It is instead recommended that you uninstall Giant/Microsoft Anti-Spyware and replace it with Windows Defender.

Dangers of gcasDtServ
As this is an executable that exists on many Windows systems, it is possible for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine Anti-Spyware executable.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this process but be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Anti-Spyware or %ProgramFiles%\GIANT Company Software\GIANT Anti-Spyware. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to it but has slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. While there are currently no known viruses, Trojans, or adware applications that disguise themselves as this process, you should look out for the presence of this file in an incorrect location or with a slightly different name.

There will typically be only one instance of this process running at a given time on a system. The presence of multiple instances may be an indicator of a malware infection. If you do not have Microsoft/Giant Anti-Spyware installed you should never see it. Seeing it in this situation would indicate a likely malware infection.

Common problems
  • GcasDtServ.exe uses 100% CPU time
    • This is a relatively common problem that can be caused by conflicts with other scanning tools such as anti-virus programs. It is recommended that you uninstall Microsoft/Giant Anti-Spyware as it has been superseded by Windows Defender.
  • GcasDtServ causes Internet connectivity issues
    • Ensure that this instance of this process is not a virus. If it is not, disable the Anti-Spyware service, uninstall it, and replace it with Windows Defender.
