What is firefox.exe?
This is the Mozilla Firefox web browser. It is the second most popular web browser behind Internet Explorer. The following is a screenshot of Firefox 2.0 running under Windows XP:

This program is not essential to the operation of the system; killing it will simply result in Firefox closing. If you wish to permanently remove Firefox, you should uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs. The following screenshot illustrates how the process should appear in the Task Manager:

Notice that firefox.exe typically runs as the current user (in this case, Mike). A process with this name running as a user other than the current user may indicate a malware infection.

Dangers of firefox
As this is a program that exists on many Windows systems, it is common for virus writers and spyware vendors to disguise their malware as the genuine one.

Some malicious files may have the same name as this but be stored somewhere other than in %ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox. Other malware may use a name that appears similar to that of the legitimate one but with slight differences in spelling or with appended digits. The following malware is known to disguise itself as firefox.exe:
  • Troj/Rbot-ATP (%SystemRoot%\System32)
    • This is a Trojan horse that is known to spread by exploiting network vulnerabilities, including the RPC DCOM flaw in Windows XP.
  • W32/Banker-EBO (%SystemRoot%\System32)
    • This is a Trojan horse that periodically attempts to download executable code from a remote URL.
  • W32/Tilebot-DN (%SystemRoot%)
    • This is a Trojan horse that is known to spread by exploiting network vulnerabilities, including the RPC DCOM flaw in Windows XP. It runs an IRC server to allow a remote attacker to take control over an infected system.
There could be several instances of this process running at a given time on a system, up to the number of Firefox windows currently open. The presence of instances exceeding this number may be an indicator of a malware infection. Furthermore, this process should not exist on systems without Mozilla Firefox installed.

Common problems
  • This process uses 100% CPU time
    • This problem is known to occur as a result of bugs third-party plugins (e.g., Adobe Flash). Try navigating away from any pages that use third-party plugins.
    • This problem can also occur as a result of faulty extensions. Turn off extensions one by one to see if the problem goes away.
  • This process uses excessive memory
    • Some versions of Mozilla Firefox had memory leaks. Updating to the latest version should resolve the problem.
